Words to Pages Chart: How Many Pages Is Any Word Count?

A double-spaced page holds about 310 words and a single-spaced page about 625 in 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. Divide your word count by those numbers for a quick estimate or use the chart below. The popular rule of thumb (250 double-spaced, 500 single-spaced) gives larger page counts, so the chart shows both where it matters.

For a quick calculation, you can also try the words-to-pages tool, or the word counter to check your exact total.

The rule is easy to remember and tends to round up. If you have a strict page limit, plan with the higher number, then confirm in your own file. When you’re just estimating, the measured numbers are closer to what a real document looks like.

How We Tested

We built a sample essay and rendered it in a word processor using fonts that match the widths of Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri and Courier New. Every test used US Letter paper, 1-inch margins, a 0.5-inch first-line indent, and no extra space between paragraphs. For each length, we counted the pages and estimated how much of the last page was used.

This is not a test in Microsoft Word itself, and your document may come out a little different. Headings, paragraph spacing, tables, images and a different word processor can all change the count.

What Changes the Page Count

  • Spacing. This has the biggest effect. Double-spacing roughly doubles the pages compared with single spacing.

  • Font and size. Wider fonts such as Arial and Courier New add pages compared with Times New Roman and Calibri. Going from 12pt to 14pt adds about a third more.

  • Margins. Wider margins reduce the words per page.

  • Paragraph spacing and indents. Extra space between paragraphs adds length.

  • Headings, images and tables. They take up space without adding words.

APA and MLA Formatting

Both APA 7th edition and MLA 9th edition use double spacing and 1-inch margins, with a readable 12pt font such as Times New Roman (APA also allows options like Calibri 11pt). Use the “double-spaced” column of the chart for body text. Title pages, reference lists and Works Cited pages are separate and usually don’t count toward the word total, though they add pages. See the APA Style website, the Purdue OWL APA guide and the MLA Style Center for the official rules.

Handwritten Pages

Most people write 100–150 words per page by hand.

If you scan handwritten pages and want to check the word count digitally, the OCR image tool can pull the text out.

How to Check Your Page Count

  1. Set the format first. Match the required font, size, spacing and margins before reading the page count.

  2. Microsoft Word: the page and word totals show in the status bar.

  3. Google Docs: go to Tools → Word count to see words, characters and pages.

  4. Exclude what doesn’t count. Title pages and reference lists usually aren’t part of the word total, but check your assignment brief.

If your draft has stray blank lines or doubled spaces, the remove spaces tool cleans them up before you measure.

Reaching a Word Limit the Right Way

If you are short, add substance: another example, evidence from a source, a counterargument, or a clearer explanation of your reasoning. If you are over, cut repetition, long quotes and sentences that don’t support your argument. Avoid changing margins, font size or spacing to fake a page count. Instructors notice, and it can break formatting rules.

Common Mistakes When Estimating Pages

  • Assuming one page always means 250 or 500 words. These are planning shortcuts, not fixed rules.

  • Forgetting title pages and references. They add pages even though they usually don’t count as words.

  • Ignoring headings, images and tables. They take up space without adding words.

  • Trusting any formula for a strict limit. Use your word processor’s real count when it matters.

  • Confusing words with characters. Some platforms count characters.

Guides for Specific Word Counts

Frequently Asked Questions

How many words are on one page?
About 310 words double-spaced and about 625 single-spaced in our test with 12pt Times New Roman and 1-inch margins. The common rule of thumb says 250 and 500.

Why do different sites give different answers?
They use different assumptions about font, margins and spacing. Some use the 250/500 rule, while others use real word processor defaults.

How do I convert words to pages?
Divide your word count by the words per page for your format: about 310 for double-spaced, 427 for 1.5 spacing, and 625 for single-spaced in our test. Or look up your word count in the chart above.

Does the font change the page count?
Yes. Arial is wider than Times New Roman, so the same text takes more pages.

Do the title page and references count as pages?
They add pages to the document, but they usually don’t count toward the word total.

Is this the same as Microsoft Word’s page count?
It is close but not identical. We tested with a word processor using fonts that match Times New Roman, Arial and Calibri, so check your own file for a strict requirement.
